Writing Effective Goals
by Dianne E. Dawson, M.A.

So how do you succeed in business? What is that magic ingredient that makes the difference between success and failure, or to go you one better-wild success and so-so just making it?

Ask any successful person and you may well get a different answer from each one. Some will speak of personal characteristics, others will talk of managing cash flow. Still others will mention winning products or services. No doubt all these play a role. My take?
  • setting reasonable and measurable goals
  • targeting your ideal client or customer
  • sticking to your competencies-and working to improve them
  • marketing your business everyday
It has been said that you can build a very successful business with a product or service that's not necessarily the best out there-if you've got the right marketing plan. We'll get more into that in future issues.

For now, let's take a look at setting goals. Want your business to be a winner? A star among the many? Set goals with STAR quality.
  • Specific
  • Time-based
  • Action-oriented
  • Results-focused and measurable
Specific

Vague goals do not inspire. Specific goals give you a sense of direction. You must laser-focus to move your business forward.
Time-based

Allow enough time to get the job done but don't stretch out target dates for completion or you will lose momentum. Pace yourself and work steady. Don't stop due to little side issues that crop up. Keep going. Keep going. Keep going.
Action-oriented

Start your goals with the word "To" and follow that by an action word. Feel the energy. Use it!
Results-focused and measurable

You'll need this part to know whether or not you have been successful in meeting your goals. How many, how much, what percentage--you get the idea. Measurable. You are looking for specific results.

The process of setting goals can bring clarity. Once set, your energies are focused. You can use that energy to get started on your goals!
